If you want to rent a movie in today’s world you don’t have a lot of choices anymore. You can go to a Redbox vending machine, try to find a blue Blockbuster machine, or look all over town for a small independent video rental store. Or you can sign up for Netflix online or subscribe to the Comcast “On Demand” service. The cheapest way around here is to just pony up the $1.30 at a Redbox.

So I signed up for Redbox with my little dollar limit credit card, just in case something weird happens by using my card in their machines, and once or twice a month I want to watch a movie, so I drive down the local convenience store with a Redbox machine out front and take home a movie for the night. I find it interesting that their return deadline is 9:00 pm no matter what time of day or night you actually rent the movie.

Not really understanding how the machines work on the inside, I wonder why they can’t just burn a DVD on demand from inside the machine. How do inventory all those movie and game titles inside that little metal box that is smaller than most people’s refrigerators? From a huge Hollywood Video or Blockbuster Video store down to a refrigerator sized box. Amazing.

I wonder how many people in America actually have a piggy bank? If they have one, do they use it for a planned savings effort or do they just use it to catch loose change when they empty their pockets at night?

To answer my own question about what I do, yes, I do have a piggy bank. It is a big pink plastic pig that holds about $200 in loose change. I know that because I have emptied the piggy bank out twice and cashed in the coins at my bank. Both times the dollar amount was very close to $200. That’s not a deliberate savings plan, but it helps!

I have not had pizza for a long time – I can’t believe that I used to eat pizza at least once a week and that now I rarely get it. The pizza is a lot more expensive these days, and I think I am losing my taste for it, too.

Today I wanted to buy a helmet for riding on a motorcycle. For one thing, it is the law that requires people on a motorcycle to wear a helmet. For another thing, I take safety very seriously and I want a helmet that is mine, that I know fits, and that looks good.

There are several different styles of helmet and I tried on a couple that I thought looked pretty cool. But then when I looked in the mirror and saw what they looked like while perched on my pumpkin, I didn’t like them after all. And to my surprise, I had to wear an extra large size. I ha no idea that my melon was an extra large one! But I guess it is good to know that now and not try to buy something size sensitive over the internet only to find out that what I ordered is too small for me.

One of the tough things about moving to a new house or taking a new job is trying to figure out who to befriend. There are always politics involved with office friendships and sometimes even with neighborhood friendships. It is not always best to run with the first one to extend a hand of welcome. In fact, sometimes that person is the worst choice of someone to align yourself with.

My best friend from school days is still a friend, but not a close friend. She and her husband have moved all over the country and we’ve managed to stay in touch, but our lives took such different paths when we left school. Glad to have her as a Facebook friend and hope she reads my blog, but really wish she lived closer so we could get together once in a while and just hang out. Miss you, g/f!

This photo is funny to me because I have a real life friends who has the last name Peacock. He is a very pretty man and gets a lot of attention with his good looks and big bank account. I found this photo and laughed about teasing my Peacock friend. I shared it on Facebook and someone must have told him right away because my phone rang in less than 10 minutes with him telling me how funny I am – on April Fool’s Day, no less.

Finding a good box that is sturdy enough for mailing goodies overseas is becoming quite a challenge. There are so many rules by the Post Office about what the box can be, that I am worried about using the wrong box and having the shipment refused by the postal clerk.

I need to send some playing cards, Sudoku books and a few packages of cookies and snacks to my cousin who is stationed in Afghanistan for a few more months. He says that they are shutting down all the field operations and that the place where they used to eat their meals has been dismantled. The men are down to eating field rations for the next month or two.

Today I’m going to the post office itself and asking them to tell me what box to use and how much it will cost. I can’t afford to take any chances of my cousin not getting this box of goodies.

I’m used to driving just 15 minutes or so and having at least three bookstores close to where I live and work. But they have all gone out of business. So now I make a special trip to Mt. Juliet to get to the bookstore out there.

Its so sad that no one seems to be buying enough books to keep the bookstores in business. I’m trying to do my part, but it is getting harder and harder to do.
